For the benefit of others, I will explain exactly how I got fooled into wasting money on the magnetic signs utah domain: I relied on only one source for information. SEO book’s keyword tool is excellent, but I don’t think it’s smart enough to catch bots spamming a search query. When you enter “utah” into the keyword tool, the 4th or 5th result is “magnetic signs utah”, clocking in with roughly ~370 hits/day. This was where I stopped and ran off to buy a domain with $ signs flashing in my eyes.
What I *should* have done, and what ended up convincing me that the search engine traffic was bogus was doublechecking the figures with Google Trends. To see what I mean, plug “Provo” into the SEO book keyword tool: note that the estimated daily Google traffic flow is at 170. Plug the same term into Google trends along with “magnetic signs utah” (estimated google traffic flow: 266) and you’ll see that provo’s rankings are far above “magnetic sign utah”. In fact, if you put in “magnetic signs utah” by itself into Google Trends, it will tell you that there isn’t enough volume for that term to return any meaningful graphs!
So Kids, save yourselves $10.00 and double check your search engine traffic before you buy what appears to be a lucrative domain name!
Do I regret my decision to buy the domain? No way! This has been a good learning experience for me in doing SEO work and I’m sure the site will eventually have some sort of traffic! Now on to my next big online moneymaking scheme!
