Finals Week at BYU

Well, it’s that time of the semester again. I actually don’t get all that nervous around finals for some reason… in fact, I kind of look forward to them as they represent the classic chance for me to salvage my grades and get them up to semi-respectable levels. :D

In actuality, I find myself often preferring classes that have their final grade based primarily, if not entirely, upon the midterms and the finals with little or no credit given for class attendance or homework. I don’t know if it’s because I test well or- well, I think I do know the answer: these classes test you strictly on the knowledge of the subject without care or regard for which method you used to obtain that knowledge. It doesn’t test you on your ability to coordinate group projects, to wake up in time to get to your class, or to dedicate yourself to trivial busywork. These classes test you on your knowledge and mastery of the subject at hand… which, correct me if I’m wrong, is the purpose of attending an educational institution? You know, to get knowledge and master subjects?

Yeah, but what do I know? I’m just an uneducated college student.

You are of course assuming that said tests actually do “test you on your knowledge and mastery of the subject at hand.” When they don’t, (because often they won’t) I at least want credit for all the busywork.
